Shaving skin discomfort is primarily due to two reasons. One reason depends on how your hair grows. And the other is a result of the shaving preparation used...what lies between the skin and the blade! There are three basic kinds of hairs or hair groups. The three are generally due to your heritage and your racial mixture. For example, persons who are African and their descendants "African-Americans" or of Mediterranean origin will generally have hair that curls as it grows. The degree of curling will depend on the heritage mixture; the same can be said for the mixture in Caucasians and those of Asian origin.
Those who have very curly hair often have a problem because the hair strand has a tendency to grow two or three days after the last shave and re-enter the skin causing "ingrown hairs" to form bumps. There are some occasions when it will not totally emerge from under the skin and also form bumps. The bumps are sore and make shaving difficult. Very close shaving helps to prevent the hair from returning to the skin and this is only possible by using a specialized shaving product.
